School Introduction

The German Swiss International School (GSIS) is a leading private international school in Hong Kong, offering a through-train, co-educational model for around 1,300 students from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

A dual-language school, GSIS operates two streams from Kindergarten to Secondary School and prepares for the German International Abitur and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, following IGCSE examinations. Students can also pursue dual-professional training through the school’s Business College.

GSIS offers a rigorous academic programme within a vibrant, creative and caring community. Fostering an open-minded world-view, we guide students towards becoming responsible and critical-thinking citizens.

Our curriculum provides learning opportunities for every student commensurate to their needs and stage of development. We teach a programme that gives students the opportunity to experience success, yet challenges them to achieve their full potential.

GSIS is certified by the German Federal Government as an “Excellent German School Abroad” and by the International Baccalaureate Organisation as an IB World School.

KINDERGARTEN

The German Swiss International School Kindergarten Department consists of a German and an English Stream and is located at the Pok Fu Lam campus. The campus is bright and flooded with natural light. It is nestled alongside the Pok Fu Lam Country Park and an indigenous Hong Kong village.

The campus floorplan is designed in such a way that in general a German stream class is located next to an English stream class, united by a shared common room. This set up supports our “One school, two streams” philosophy and enhances the social and foreign language development of our students.

The Kindergarten German stream has four classes, with children of mixed ages.   After two years of Kindergarten, or when the child has turned 5 before the 1st of September of the current school year, these children will attend the German preschool class. Three English Stream classes are divided into two different age groups to prepare for the English Primary 1.

In each class, a trained and qualified teacher, either a native German or English speaker, and a teaching assistant care for the children.

We encourage children to be confident and independent learners and provide them with a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare them for the future. GSIS champions learning through play and supports this by enabling children to choose their own preferred medium from a wide range of learning environments and activities on offer.

Each Kindergarten class features a home and reading corner, a construction area, and writing and drawing tables. It boasts plenty of educational toys including building and construction materials, arts and crafts, puzzles, and maths and phonics games. In addition, the campus accommodates a library and a gym as well as a spacious outdoor playing area, including a sandpit, all of which provide plenty of free space.

NEW for 2019/2020 Academic Year – Two bilingual classes in the German International Stream – One bilingual class will offer German and English whilst one will offer German and Mandarin. Each class will have a native speaker for each language ensuring 50:50 ratio.

Afternoon Activities

After regular school hours our children may participate in the Afternoon Activities Programme (AA). Suitable programs for Kindergarten children may include activities like Music, Sports, or Language programs. The courses run for one term and the course fee is not included in the school fee. Information about the Afternoon Activities programme can be found at https://mygsis.gsis.edu.hk/learning/outside-the-classroom/aa/.

Given the traffic and access restrictions of the Pok Fu Lam campus, all children are required to purchase a bus pass and utilise the school bus service (mandatory bus policy).
